Songbird

Songbird Key Features:

Songbird is built on Mozilla’s XULRunner platform and it allows skinning and add-ons similar to Firefox, but it uses a lot of RAM. It is called by many the Firefox of media players. Another selling point is browsing web pages from within Songbird (Gecko engine) and automatic music discovery(“url slurper”) – music files embedded on a web page are displayed on a separate pane where they can be played or downloaded.

iTunes VS Songbird

iTunes is better than Songbird?

  • 1. iTunes is so integrated with Mac system. The Media browser, iTunes Store, Spotlight, etc., just spread out your music throughout the system. This will naturally cause you to add songs to the iTunes library instead of Songbird, which means that the next time you launch Songbird, you have to reimport them into that library.
  • 2. Songbird’s performance is pathetic. It uses up a whole lot of memory and the CPU usage for simple things like scrolling the music library uses up a whole lot of CPU.
  • 3. iTunes has become the central hub of managing all media on the Mac. But Songbird has absolutely no video support. What this means is, every time you want to watch a movie, TV show or Music video, you need to open up iTunes.

Songbird is a good iTunes Alternative?

  • 1. Songbird a really feature rich panel, displaying different tabs for Artist info, News, and a stunning photo view displaying pictures of the currently playing artist.
  • 2. Songbird has a lot of third party add-ons like lyrics sidebars, Fairplay support, iPod support, different skins, and a whole lot of other interesting functions.
  • 3. Songbird features a basic web browser. You can visit websites, perform searches, and do quick and dirty browsing if you need it.

"Songbird is a good iTunes alternative. It has great features, nice interface, can be customized with plug ins, can be synced with external devices and has watch folders option! what else do you wish for? forget to mention that is free."

Songbird Review

"Great looking feature set but it crashes after less than a minute on my 2010 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard. If I click on anything after initially starting a ShoutCast stream, it crashes immediately; If I don't click on anything after starting a stream it crashes within about 30 seconds."
